6 Goals | Episode 22

This week I talk about how I'm sorry it's been weeks and weeks since I've published, and how my goals have been going. Writing and drawing have been going well, and workout - but the rest have fallen to the way side.

My Best Run Yet

I went for a really nice 3.2 mile run four times around the park yesterday with my dog. Right off the bat I felt great and ran the first loop at 7:14 minutes, faster than ever before, so I knew I was running at a good pace. Ever since high school, when I ran track and cross country, I've wanted to run a race again. I figured a 5K was about all I could handle in my pudgy out of shape state. I wanted to wait until I thought I could at least break a half hour in one of these races. Well, yesterday's run proved to me that if I keep running consistently, then it should be no problem by the time I get into a race to break 30 minutes for a 5K. Now if I can just get back to my high school times of breaking 17 minutes :) It will take a lot of work and a long time to get back there.

Here's the stats:
3.2 miles in 30:30 minutes

Running Won't Kill Your Knees!

Shoes No More?
Here is some more inspiration for you to start, or keep running. I've always heard that it's really hard on your joints, particularly your knees. Well check out this NPR article, where they write that a lot of research is showing us now that running does not kill your knees. That's something that has always been in the back of my mind as I thought about running for my whole life. Something else in the way of running research that has caught my attention recently is the idea of running barefoot. Apparently it's a lot healthier for you than running in highly padded shoes. Shoes tend to make you strike the ground with the heal of your foot first, where as running barefoot you strike with the front pad of your foot first. This creates a lot less force on your leg, and people around the world like Mexico and Kenya have been running barefoot for years. So with that I am for the time being A) not going to buy a new expensive pair of running shoes, and B) going to give this barefoot running thing a try. Hopefully I've got some fun running segments and a 6 mile goal achieved to report to you next Monday!

6 Goals | Episode 11

In this eleventh episode I talk about how once I again I missed most of my goals, but did have a blast camping over the 4th of July weekend with family. I also talk about a book I read that was very inspiring for runners called Ultra Marathon Man by Dean Karnazes.

Ultra Marathon Man

So, I mentioned that I was going to listen to the Running with The Pack podcast this week to try and get myself motivated to get some runs in. Well, in Episode 37 I heard them talk about a book called Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner. I picked it up via audio book through my local library's wonderful website. Let's just say I'm inspired. This man Dean Karnazes is amazing. He is probably the most inspirational athlete I've ever read of. Check out the book if you need a kick to get off the couch and get your running shoes on. There's a movie too if you're not the book reading kind. You're welcome.

A Run With a Friend

I went for a half hour run yesterday with a buddy who's in much better shape than I am. He's been running five times a week for the past few months. He had to slow his pace way down for me, and I was still dying! It was really fun to run with someone though, especially a great friend. I'll have to start going to the Flying Irish Running Club on Thursdays to run with other people more often. Even though I was about to collapse throughout the run, it was really fun to go for a run with someone.

A Run with Many Dogs

I went for a run last night at my favorite park again with my dog. This time, however, there were two other dogs following us during the run. No one at the park owned the dogs or knew them. People kept calling them away from me, but whenever they ran with us I slowed down. I tried stopping to shew them away, but they just kept following us around the park. Cute dogs, and nice, but very annoying. Other than that is was a good, if not slow run. I felt great so I'd still call it a good run.

Here's the stats:

A New Sketch

Last night I drew this sketch while trying out a new show called Flashpoint with my wife. It's just a random face from my imagination. Although, now that I think of it, I think the protagonist of the show was bald, so that's probably why I drew a bald character. I started drawing it before the show started, but there you go.

6 Goals | Episode 04

In this fourth episode of 6 Goals I talk about one of the workouts I did with my family as we went for a walk and were hit by rain. I also talk about why I haven't been hitting my goals - sleep deprivation. We have a one month old, and a 3 year old who gets up to go potty every night between 1 and 4 AM. This episode marks the second time I have hit a goal, last week I did 6 sketches and this week I completed six workouts for the week, so there's something. Thanks for listening!

Sketches

My Baby in his swing.
Here are some sketches from my sketchbook. I should have uploaded some of these a while ago, but most of them are from this week. There are some other sketches but they're pretty bad - they were ones I was doing while trying to learn how to draw a turtle.
A turtle I'm going to use in a web comic
Some sketches learning how to draw a turtle
Trying to remember how to connect the muscles of the shoulder to the arm (deltoid to tricept and bicept)
Some more turtle sketches and a face from a magazine.

A Run Indoors

I went for a run last night on a treadmill in a hotel workout room. My goal was to run 3 miles. It took me forever though, because I set the pace below 5 miles an hour for most of the run. I noticed most of the way through that I wasn't breathing nearly as hard as I do when I run outside. Also when I looked down at my feet I could tell that I wasn't running as fast as my normal pace. I punched it up to 6 miles per hour near the end of the run and that got my blood pumping. I hate running on treadmills - it's not natural. Staying in the same spot for that long is weird while running, and when I get off I have a strange sensation like I'm moving forward really fast while walking slow. I don't like it. I realized another thing that can be good or bad about running on treadmills - it sets the speed for you instead of you listening to your body. This can be good to push you, but I notice in parts of my run that I go slower and faster through the run. I'm not sure which is better.

Here's the stats:
3.0 miles in 36:00 minutes

My Fourth Run

Went for a great run today. Too bad it's the only one I'll get in for this week. I took my dog and instead of pounding it out on pavement, I drove to a nearby park. There's a nice dirt packed trail that loops around the park for 0.8 miles. I was going to run it twice, but felt good so I did a third loop. There was a little league baseball game going and other people walking dogs and enjoying the sun. It was great. My legs and lungs felt great too! Overall it was wonderful.

Here's the stats:

More Running

I have now gone for three runs. I just finished the third, and it felt great! On my second run, I was really feeling it in my legs. After my first run I was really tight just above my achilles, both during the day and while running. Today my legs felt great. I noticed they weren't sore anymore and then during my run they felt really good. They weren't sore, they weren't getting tired. This is one factor I attribute to my faster time. Also, I never had dry heaves due to sinus congestion loosening up and going into my throat. I have a really weak gag reflex, and whenever that happens I have to stop running, and then while I start I'm seeing stars and it takes me a while to get back up to speed. Also, I ran the loop backwards for the first time, and I think it contributed a lot to my mental state during the run. I was seeing the sights I usually see at the end of the run, just as I started. This made me feel like I was already farther than I was the whole time, and I think this positive feeling helped me keep a fast pace the entire time. On my second run, I was breathing really hard and my legs were sore, but I felt like I was really pushing myself. This time I just tried to stay at a comfortable pace that felt fast but was a pace I knew I could keep throughout the run. I slowed down here and there, but overall I felt great. The funny thing is, my wife and I got way less sleep last night then ever before because our baby kept us up all night. Running is weird like that; I remember having some of my best workouts when I felt like crap or had little sleep the night before going into the workout. Well, that about wraps it up. I'm going to run the same loop next time, but in the original direction and see if I can still break 18 minutes. Thanks for stopping by!

Here's the stats:
1.7 miles in 20:03 minutes
1.7 miles in 17:50 minutes

My First Run & First Sketch

Sketch 01
I went for my first run today. It felt great, but I am very out of shape. I have a 2.2 mile loop that I usually run, but it has a long steep hill and today I just wanted to ease into it. I'm running low on sleep because we just had a baby three days ago; I'm sure those who've brought home a newborn can relate. We got back from the hospital yesterday, and both need to catch up on sleep desperately. My wife is doing well, and our beautiful little baby is too. For those wondering we had a boy. He was born on the 14th of April at 6 lbs 13 oz and 20 in long. We can't get over what a blessing he is. He is as cute as they come, and very sweet. Anyways, the drawing to the right is my first sketch, and I'm going to use it whenever I post about running. It's a drawing of my running shoes, with a few changes here and there. As for my first run, I can tell I'm going to be a little sore in the legs and back; I'm glad I took it easy today. I'm on my way to 6 miles for the week as I start this next project to get healthy, read my bible consistently, and produce more writing and art.

Here's the stats:
1.7 miles in 20:22 minutes
